A historic day for Visionwest. Today we officially opened and blessed Rongopai ("good news"), our new 24-apartment community housing development at our Glendale Road campus.
The day began before sunrise, as leadership, kaimahi and our Board gathered for a dawn blessing with karakia, waiata and prayer over each of the homes that will soon welcome whānau. Later, we were joined by partners, supporters and government representatives to celebrate this important milestone together.
The name Rongopai was unveiled by Matua Fred, reflecting our desire to embody good news in practical ways through housing, food support, counselling, mentoring, healthcare and wraparound support. Maliena Jones, Lisa Woolley and Associate Housing Minister Tama Potaka all acknowledged the significance of this housing kaupapa and the partnership required to bring it to life.
While today was a celebration, it was also a reminder of the need. More than 19,000 households remain on New Zealand's housing register, including 1,146 households in West Auckland alone. These 24 apartments won't solve the housing crisis, but they will be life-changing for the 24 households who will soon call Rongopai home.
Rongopai is the first stage of Te Kāinga o te Tūmanako | Village of Hope, a long-term vision to bring housing, support and community together in one place for West Auckland whānau.

A team of 46 fundraisers from Visionwest and friends (including four-legged friends) walked from Britomart/Waitematā to Onehunga on World Homeless Day last Saturday. Plenty of snacks, sunshine and spring blooms were enjoyed along the way.
The 16km journey may be over, but the Long Walk Home to support whānau isn't yet!
There are still 10 days left to make a donation. Every extra dollar will help families who have experienced homelessness settle into a safe home with the essentials they need to begin again.

The Supportive Housing Team has been working hard alongside 22 prospective tenants preparing to move into a brand-new residential complex in West Auckland. This is the team's largest permanent housing project to date, and it wouldn't be possible without amazing partners like Junk2Go Rubbish Removal.
Sometimes whānau arrive at their new home without the essentials which turn four walls into a safe and comfortable place to live. This is where Junk2Go comes in. On Thursdays, they invite the Housing Team to their depot to pack a truck full of quality items such as beds, clothing and furniture sorted from their collections, ready for whānau to choose and put in their homes at no cost.
Together, we get to help those who have experienced homelessness ease into their new chapter, while keeping household goods with potential out of landfill.
We are excited that Visionwest Community Trust and Junk2Go have been named finalists in the "Outstanding Collaboration" category for the 2026 Sustainable Business Network Awards! So grateful for this incredible partnership and the difference we get to make in the community together 💚
