Michael’s Story – Supported Living At Home

Though Michael worked as an industrial electrician, his passion for repairing clocks began early in life. โ€œAs a hobby, I always repaired watches from being 14 years old.โ€

Later, after moving to Pฤpฤmoa, he found himself surrounded by clocks needing attention – old family pieces brought out of garages and boxes as people relocated.

Michael would strip the mechanism down, identify worn bearings, remake them, adjust the teeth so they meshed properly, and bring the clock back to life. โ€œBy the time I finished setting it up, itโ€™s like a new clock.โ€

But over time, Michaelโ€™s health changed. His eyesight deteriorated. The work with clocks became harder. His breathing also worsened. Now, an oxygen concentrator runs beside him 24 hours a day. โ€œOtherwise I canโ€™t breathe. I need it to breathe.โ€

Having first received in-home support through another provider, Visionwest has now been part of his daily rhythm since 2019. Each morning, Kyla arrives to support him. “One day Kyla came and said, ‘Iโ€™m now your carer. Iโ€™ll be here every day in the morning.'”

That consistency matters deeply.

She comes exactly the right time every time. And that is something really nice.

Kyla helps with the practical things Michael can no longer manage easily, including bringing him oxygen when he needs a boost.

The reason Kyla comes to me is because I need help. And thatโ€™s it. I do need help.

Without that support, Michael is clear about what life would be like. โ€œI would be struggling. I really would be struggling.โ€ More than that, he believes it would force him from the home he loves.

I want to stay in my home as long as I can.

Support from Visionwest helps make that possible.

I would not like to be without it. Put it that way.

And alongside the care, there is humour, friendship, and dignity.

We laugh and joke as well. I mean, itโ€™s not just all slog-slog. We laugh, we joke, we entertain each other.
