When Joy first came to Visionwest, she says, “my world collapsed.” She had recently come out of “a very abusive marriage,” was living in Women’s Refuge, grieving the death of her father, and trying to care for her young son, who had been diagnosed with an intellectual disability.
I was struggling financially, morally, emotionally – in all the ways. I had no hope, I had no faith, I lost everything.
It was her Women’s Refuge social worker who first guided her toward Visionwest. Joy remembers arriving at the Whānau Centre and meeting social worker Arnia. What stayed with her was not simply the practical support, but the way she was seen.
She was the first person who asked me how I am. It was like the first time somebody saw my wounds… how hurt I was.
From there, Visionwest wrapped around Joy with practical care. She was referred to the Visionwest Wellbeing Centre for counselling, where she began to talk about what she had been carrying in isolation. She was connected with a money mentor who helped her learn budgeting and financial independence. Food parcels eased immediate pressure. The Whānau Centre became somewhere she could return whenever life felt confusing or overwhelming.
Whatever situation I have, and I don’t know how to do it, I was so puzzled. I always run to them and they always guide me.
Over time, that support began to rebuild something deeper.
When I came here, this was like a new world for me. So many people, everyone is there to help and with the smiling face, always available to listen. So, a lot of hope came in my life.
The change has reached her son too. When they first arrived, Joy says, he was “highly, highly traumatised,” but now, with support, “he is safe and happy.” He is attending mainstream school, speaking more, and growing in confidence. She still remembers their first Christmas From The Heart, when he saw “a room full of toys” and realised, “I get to choose my toy.”
Today Joy says, “I feel more valued. I feel I have a voice now. I’m able to live my life with dignity. My mana is more intact.”
Looking ahead, she is hopeful:
I wish to live the life I want… a respectful life, a life with dignity. I think I have found myself.
