In February 2023, ImpactLab reviewed Visionwest’s Pae Aronui Programme and prepared a Good Measure Report as an evaluation of the programme’s effectiveness. Part of the report’s findings is the societal value of providing focused and culturally relevant education for young people in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Visionwest’s programmes for rangatahi Māori walk alongside rangatahi providing one-on-one and roopu mentoring for 12 months. It includes exposure to learning opportunities and choices, training and employment pathways, wraparound wellbeing support, skills-based training, additional qualifications, driver licensing, and career planning and coaching through a te ao Māori framework.

The results of the Impact Lab Report reveal the life transformation that can be experienced by rangatahi who are a part of a programme that is tailored to their culture and learning style.

From the 30 rangatahi (aged 17 – 22) who completed the Pae Aronui course measured for this report, by the end of their study:

  • 50% were employed.
  • 40% were in further education.

We hope this report will inspire the reader to think more deeply about how education is delivered and the positive results that can be achieved when it is provided in a relevant and appropriate way.
